Ethan Hawke and His $70 J.Crew Shirt Make Beach Style Look Easy

If you can’t hack how to dress when the weather’s turning the asphalt into a large-format frying pan, here’s a fail-safe trick: make like Ethan Hawke on the beach. Earlier this week, on the set of his forthcoming movie Leave the World Behind, Hawke strolled seaside in an indisputably stellar summer ensemble. Ethan Hawke is a movie star. So if you were expecting a heady fashion-forward getup attached to a miserably out-of-reach price tag, we, the mere theater-goers and Met Gala streamers, are happy to report that his beach outfit is neither.

In fact, it’s more than just a formula for a great summer fit—it’s a formula for a great summer fit at a decidedly regular-guy price point. Up top, a very “Tony Soprano on vacation” tank and attention-grabbing camp shirt from J.Crew (sans gold chain, sadly, but the full goatee more than makes up for it). Down below, navy Birdwell swim trunks with a hint of contrast stitching. Finished off with a pair of classic Wayfarer sunglasses, it’s an ideal summer look. (For all the eagle-eyed brand obsessives out there, the most expensive part of Hawke’s entire outfit is a pair of leather RRL sandals—and he’s not even wearing ‘em!)

As it is, Hawke’s outfit is *chef’s kiss emoji*, but you can and should riff on his basic recipe to suit your tastes. Ditch the sunglasses for a bucket hat. Swap out the sandals for loafers. Layer on a graphic tee instead of a plain tank. The only thing you shouldn’t do? Shave your goatee.
