Mapua University recovered from a first set debacle to draw a 15-25, 25-23, 25-18, 19-25, 15-12 five-set victory in the NCAA Season 97 women’s volleyball tournament on Wednesday.

The Lady Cardinals and the Lady Stags are now both with an even 1-1 win-loss card following today’s game.

With the match knotted at one set apiece, Mapua got down to business in the third frame with team captain Jonina Fernandez, Nicole Ong, and Therese Manalo setting the tempo as they also took advantage of San Sebastian’s 13 errors in the set.

Three straight attack errors from Kath Santos allowed Mapua to take a 14-9 cushion before a smash in the middle by Ong made it a 23-16 lead for the Lady Cardinals.

A miscommunication on the side of San Sebastian awarded Mapua the set point before Chenie Batac finished it off with a service ace, 25-18.

Eager to force a deciding fifth set, San Sebastian came alive in the fourth with back-to-back hits from Tina Marasigan bringing the team to a set point, 24-17. Mapua would still score two consecutive points but Marasigan capped it off with another smash, 25-19.

Tied again at 5-all in the deciding set, Mapua leaned to its hefty defense with Ong denying Santos to help build a 3-0 rally, 8-5. Back-to-back attacks by Fernandez brought Mapua up, 12-8, before Santos notched three straight points for 11-13 spread.

Fernandez went for a crosscourt hit for the match point before setter Trixie Gojol went for a one-two play to seal the deal for Mapua.

Mapua next faces Jose Rizal University on Sunday while San Sebastian will look to recover against three-time defending champion Arellano University on Saturday.
