On Day 5, England was set to chase a target of 299 runs by the Kiwis and the English batters, Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes in particular went on to create a fury of assault on the visitors. This inning helped England register a new record in the highest successful run chases, particularly in the fourth innings of a game at the Bridge.

Bairstow missed out on being the fastest Englishman to score a test hundred by just a single delivery. The record is still held by Gilbert Jessop who smashed a century off just 76 balls in the final test match of the Ashes series in 1902. Bairstow came very close to reaching the milestone that was set some 120 years ago.

England’s fourth innings was a mixture of fun, horror, and entertainment. Tension arose in the English camp after Zac Crawley was dismissed for a duck as the Kiwis went on to pick some early wickets in the form of Roe Root and Ollie Pope. When star all-rounder Ben Stokes came to bat, England needed 206 runs to win.

Stokes and Root continued their charge as the duo kept England’s hopes alive and headed to the tea break. Following tea began the carnage of Jonny Bairstow and Ben Stokes. Bairstow who had a pretty barren run, off late in the form of IPL 2022 rose to the occasion and shone brightly for his side.

The skipper Stokes played a marvelous knock of 75 from 70 but it was the blitzkrieg of Jonny Bairstow that shook everyone on the ground. A man determined to prove his point, Bairstow smashed 136 off 92 to help England take an unassailable lead in the series. His innings consisted of 14 fours and 7 huge sixes.
