Russia slams longtime diplomat who resigned over war in Ukraine: “He’s against us”

Russia on Tuesday criticized comments made by one of its longtime UN diplomats who resigned this week for Russian President Vladimir Putin was in Ukraine.

“It’s not with us, it’s against us” Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov he told Moscow-based news outlets Tuesday.

Boris Bondarev, from 2002 at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and from 2019 Advisor to the Russian Mission at the United Nations Office in Geneva, announced his resignation in a letter published on LinkedIn.

“For twenty years of my diplomatic career I have seen several turning points in our foreign policy, but I have never been so ashamed of my country as on February 24 of this year,” he wrote.

Bondarev said that “aggressive was unleashed by Putin“posed not only a threat to Ukraine, but also to a free Russian society.

In a vicious letter, he accused Kremlin officials of trying to “stay in power forever” and “living in pompous and tasteless buildings.”

Peskov rejected the Russian diplomat and said Putin’s war in Ukraine is supported by most Russians.

“Mr. Bondarev is no longer with us,” Peskov said. “He is critical of the policies of the Russian leadership, which are supported by practically the entire population of our country.

“As a result, this gentleman spoke out against the consolidated opinion of our country,” he added.

Bondarev accused the Kremlin of using 1930s Soviet-era propaganda practices and claimed to have seen the lies he employs about his mountain nation in recent years.

“I am sorry to admit that overall the level of lies and lack of professionalism in the work of the Foreign Ministry has steadily increased over the past two decades. However, in recent years, this has become simply catastrophic,” he said.

Russia has relied on a litany of propagandists tactics to garner support and protect the reality of war from its own population.

Putin has yet to declare war on Ukraine and continues to argue that it is a “special military operation” to eradicate Nazism in Ukraine, despite Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy being Jewish and democratically elected.
