Reform Party Surges in Polls as By-Election Looms

Nigel Farage's Reform UK party has surged to second place in national polling ahead of a crucial by-election in the Midlands, putting pressure on both Labour and the Conservatives.

Nigel Farage's Reform UK party has surged to second place in national polling ahead of a crucial by-election in the Midlands, putting pressure on both Labour and the Conservatives in what political analysts are describing as a pivotal moment for British politics.

A YouGov poll published on Thursday placed Reform on 28% of the national vote, just three points behind Labour on 31%, with the Conservatives languishing at 18% — their lowest recorded figure since the 2024 general election collapse.

The Wolverhampton East by-election, triggered by the death of the sitting Labour MP, is now widely seen as a three-way contest. Reform's candidate, former soldier Dan Whitfield, has drawn large crowds at campaign events and generated significant media coverage.

Farage, who has been barnstorming the constituency this week, told supporters: "The people of this country are fed up with being ignored. Reform is the real opposition now."

Labour strategists privately acknowledged the race was closer than expected, while publicly projecting confidence. The party's local candidate, Priya Sharma, has focused her campaign on NHS investment and cost-of-living pressures.

The by-election is scheduled for 12 June. Political scientists say the result will be closely watched as a bellwether for the next general election, now expected no later than 2029.
